Google enters the mobile
market |
|
|
|
For weeks the web has been
awash with rumours about
Google’s own-brand
smartphone. So all eyes were
on the Internet giant
earlier this month when its
plans were officially
unveiled.

Google has entered the mobile telephony
market with a mobile device it is calling
the Nexus One. In a press release, Google
confirmed the Nexus One would be available
for purchase ‘without service’ meaning that
any GSM network SIM card can be inserted
into the device. This effectively gives
consumers the freedom to purchase a Nexus
One ‘unlocked’ and then separately arrange a
service plan through their preferred
operator.

From
smartphone to “superphone”
This new venture is widely regarded as a
move by Google to ensure it remains relevant as people increasingly
searching the web using mobile devices rather than typing queries
into a PC. However, the corporation has also upped the ante seeking
to differentiate its phone from the competition with a new term. |
|
Google says the Nexus One
belongs to a new class of
devices which it calls
“superphones” and claims
it’s as powerful as laptop
computers were three or four
years ago. |

Andy Rubin, VP of Engineering commented: “The Nexus One belongs in
the emerging class of devices which we call ‘superphones,’ with the
1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ chipset making it as powerful as your
laptop computer of three to four years ago. It's our way to raise
the bar on what's possible when it comes to creating the best mobile
experience for consumers.”

Top five features of
the Nexus One phone
We have selected the top 5 features of
Google’s new phone as listed below but for more information
read the
Internet search giant’s own press release.
1. Can be
purchased unlocked or as part of a contract
The Nexus phone is compatible with any
other SIM GSM card and the all the providers’ tariffs will be
available through the on-line boutique. Available to buy through its
on-line shop, either un-locked (529$) or as part of a contract
(179$) with a GSM service partner, Google’s phone sets itself apart
from the others thanks to its advanced voice command features
|
| |
 |
2. Web
orientated apps
The Nexus One operating system is loaded
with Google Maps Navigation software (offering turn-by-turn driving
directions with voice output), email (multiple Gmail accounts;
universal inbox and Exchange support), telephone books (aggregate
contacts from multiple sources, including Facebook) and a Quick
Contacts function, which enables users to quickly switch between
communication applications and social networking sites.
3. Voice
interaction:
Verbal transcription (integrated
dictation capability automatically translating voice into text),
voice activated phone (Search Google, call contacts, or get driving
directions by just speaking into your phone), use a voice-enabled
keyboard for all text fields (speak a text message, instant message,
tweet, Facebook update, or complete an email), get transcribed
voicemail with Google Voice integration, without changing your
number. |
|
|
4. Multimedia functionality
The 5 megapixel camera includes LED
flash, auto focus, zoom, white balance and colour effects. View
pictures and Picasa Web Albums in the new 3D Gallery. Record Hi-Res
MPEG4 video, and then upload to YouTube with one click.
5. First in a
range
The Nexus One phone can be bought via
Google’s
on-line shop. This
is a new mass distribution channel for Google through which other
Android products can be purchased. In the future Google hopes to
launch new partner products and extend it ranges worldwide. |
