IT Support for Schools

Overall responsibility for IT in most schools typically falls to the Business Manager, Bursar or Head Teacher and for those schools with no on-site IT resource we are able to provide a fully outsourced service allowing staff at the school to remain 100% focused on their own job without worrying about IT.

We have a friendly, knowledgeable team of 1st line engineers available on the phone to take calls and fix most day to day problems, as well as a vastly experienced team of 2nd and 3rd line engineers available to fix more complex issues and visit the school site as and when required. Most of the schools we work with have regular scheduled site visits built in to their monthly support agreement, which range from one visit per quarter to one per week, depending on the size and complexity of the school’s IT network.

Some schools are fortunate enough to have their own internal IT resource in the form of an IT Manager or Network Engineer and here we are able to work alongside this resource providing holiday, sickness and overflow cover as well as high-level network support and strategic input and planning. We are even able to station Network Engineers permanently on site should this be a requirement for the school.

We recognise that the needs and preferences of each school will be different and we have the flexibility to cope with most requirements. We have a specialist education team who have many years of combined experience dealing within the sector and are used to the pressures of the school environment. They understand that IT problems can easily lead to lessons being held up and unnecessary additional pressures being put on staff and students alike, so the onus is always on fixing issues as quickly and efficiently as possible, whilst aiming to ensure that they do not reoccur.

Network Projects for Schools

We have an open minded approach to school networking projects, as we understand that one solution does not fit all. Although most schools face similar challenges, each has slightly different needs and objectives, so we take the time to really get to know your establishment so that we can offer a solution which meets your specific requirements.

Our experienced projects team provide independent, education-focused advice and will only recommend the most reliable and robust products that have been tried and tested in school and business environments. We know that technology has the possibility to change learning spaces and so will recommend products and services that organisations should be using both inside and outside of the classroom environment.

When sourcing products we carefully consider the school’s current IT system with the overall aim to providing a network that enhances the school’s IT infrastructure whilst also increasing the learning experience of the students/pupils. Some of the projects we have recently worked on include:

  • Windows Server upgrade and migration
  • PC and Laptop upgrades and software rollouts
  • Robust firewall installations with web and content filtering
  • Ubiquiti UniFi and Ruckus WiFi surveys and deployments
  • SMART boards and Promethean boards including interactive Multi-Touch models
  • Overhead projectors and replacement bulbs
  • Multiple Gigabit switch upgrade and deployment
  • Onsite and offsite Backup/DR solutions, including use of Veeam software
  • Data storage solutions including the use of SAN technology
  • Many and varied Server Virtualisation projects using VMWare or Hyper-V
  • Data Security overhaul including password policy and user education

Case Study

"The level of cooperation, flexibility and trust you offered showed real commitment to our school and the future business relationship. We enjoy excellent relationships with every member of Net Technical staff and the improvements have had a tangible impact on the way we work. We rarely spend time fighting fires anymore but can focus instead on delivering a really good service to our school population."
Erica Wiczling, Network Manager, Woking High School

Case Study

Woking High School is a coeducational secondary school located in the Horsell area of Woking, Surrey. The school has approximately 1200 pupils between the ages of 11-16 and has held specialist Technology College status since 2004, converting to become an academy in 2013.

Net Technical Solutions was engaged in June 2013 to provide Network Support services to complement the existing on premise IT resource. At this time the school operated around a dozen physical servers which served the user base of 150 staff and 1200 students. The infrastructure was creaking both in terms of hardware and software, with many servers still running Windows Server 2003, no disaster recovery plan in place and network switches which were over 10 years old.

Armed with a thorough understanding of the network, we listened to the school’s plans and strategy then offered a detailed proposal for a phased upgrade of infrastructure over 2-3 years. Phase 1 replaced all switching infrastructure enabling staff to benefit from gigabit network speeds, Phase 2 saw critical servers virtualised and data storage streamlined and replicated off site whilst Phase 3 saw the virtualisation of the remaining servers and enabled automatic failover for full disaster recovery.

Since completing the project and with a stable network infrastructure now in place, Woking High School has moved forwards in many ways. Exchange has been replaced with Office 365, remote access into the school has been vastly improved and each project has been delivered on time and in budget with full documentation and handover.
